Aesthetic dentistry

## The anatomy of a smile

Aesthetic dentistry works with proportion. One classic guide sets the visible widths of the upper front teeth in the golden proportion, 1.618 : 1 : 0.618. Others read the line of the gums, the curve the teeth make against the lower lip, and the structure of each tooth beneath its surface.

Labelled: Facial midline, 1.618, 1, 0.618, Golden proportion, Gingival zenith, Smile arc, Buccal corridor.

Fig. 1 — Upper front teeth, frontal view: visible widths in the golden proportion, gingival zeniths and the smile arc.

Labelled: Root, Crown, Enamel, Gingiva, Alveolar bone, Cementum, Cemento-enamel junction, Dentin, Pulp, Root canal.

Fig. 2 — Upper central incisor in sagittal section.

An illustration of general dental proportions, not a patient or a treatment result. We advise to avail for cosmetic procedures only for therapeutic or reconstructive reasons.
